The Egg Donation Process

The egg donation process is pretty simple. If the embryo transfer is to be a "fresh" transfer, the Egg Donor will be put on birth control pills to coordinate her cycle with that of the Intended Mother or Surrogate. She will take a medication called Lupron (or comparable medication), which is used to prevent premature release of eggs. At the appropriate time, the Egg Donor will begin taking hormone injections to stimulate her ovaries and mature her eggs. This "stimulation phase" is generally 10-14 days in duration. The Egg Donor will be monitored at the fertility clinic by ultrasounds and blood tests to monitor follicle development and estrogen levels. At the appropriate time, she will be told when to administer a hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) injection, which must be given at the precise time instructed, triggering ovulation. Thirty-five (35) hours after the hCG injection is given, the egg retrieval procedure will take place. The eggs are harvested under a "light" general anesthesia; any pain or discomfort should be minor, resembling menstrual cramps. Following the procedure, the Egg Donor will return to the clinic for a follow-up exam.
